Veterinary Assistant

A Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in caring for animals. Their duties vary depending on the workplace but generally includes:  

1. Clinical & Medical Support:*  

– *Prepare exam rooms* and set up equipment.  

– *Restrain animals* safely during exams or procedures.  

– *Assist with diagnostics*, such as holding pets for X-rays or lab tests.  

– *Clean and sterilize* surgical instruments.  

– *Administer medications* (under a vet’s supervision).

2. Animal Care & Handling:*  

– *Feed, bathe, and exercise* animals.  

– *Monitor vital signs* (temperature, pulse, respiration).  

– *Provide post-operative care*, like monitoring recovery.  

– *Comfort distressed animals* and keep them calm.

3. Administrative Duties:*  

– *Greet clients* and schedule appointments.  

– *Update medical records* and file lab reports.  

– *Manage inventory* of supplies and medications.  

– *Educate pet owners* on basic care (e.g., nutrition, grooming).

4. Cleaning & Maintenance:*  

– *Disinfect cages, kennels, and surgical areas.*  

– *Launder towels and bedding.*  

– *Dispose of biohazard waste* properly.

*Skills Needed:*  

✔ *Animal handling & patience* (comfort with pets & exotics).  

✔ *Basic medical knowledge* (first aid, vital signs).  

✔ *Communication skills* (with vets, techs, and clients).  

✔ *Physical stamina* (lifting animals, standing for long hours).  

✔ *Attention to detail* (following instructions precisely).
